Great Ayton is quite an interesting town. A statue of the young James Cook stands on the High Green not far from the site of the Cook family home which was taken to Australia in 1934. A memorial Garden with an obelisk dedicated to Cook sits here now. It is a replica of the granite obelisk which stood on the promontory of Point Hicks, where Lieutenant Zachary Hicks of the Endeavour first sighted Australia.
